“Stop worrying,” Galen tells me as I pace my suite at the Plaza Hotel.

“I can’t shake this feeling,” I tell him. “Something is going to happen tonight.”

Jareth perks up. “Of course, something is going to happen. We’re finally going to put the nail in Luca’s coffin. We’ll be rid of him and can finally move on to regaining your birthright.”

I shake my head. “That’s not it.”

“Let’s just go and get Briar from Club Sin,” Galen says. “You left her alone and since you haven’t yet decided if she’s trustworthy, you’re anxious.”

I nod. Maybe that’s it. Or maybe it’s the fact I left her knowing Luca’s men were sniffing around Club Sin. Maybe they know she’s there.

The question she asked me before I left echoes in my thoughts. Do you care about me, Cassius? I don’t want to care. I want exactly what’s written in the contract, a consensual affair between myself, a woman, and my two best friends. Nothing more. I want to deposit an ungodly sum of money into her account and walk away without a second thought, without a single regret.

Unfortunately, that’s not going to happen this time. For the last hour, the image of her sitting in bed, laughing and smiling with dark, messy waves and flushed cheeks, has filtered into my thoughts over and over. I can’t stop imagining her that way or picturing how she might look in my bed back home.

Just your bed?

I shake my head because I can’t start picturing her in my life, imagining all the ways she might fit because my attention needs to be on meeting Luca tonight. Once it’s over, then I’ll allow myself a bit of make-believe.

“You’re right,” I state firmly. “Let’s get her and finish our business so we can celebrate the end of Luca Farrugia.”

Nothing seems amiss when we enter the lobby of the club. We’re greeted with nods of recognition but when we approach Room Twelve, my blood sings with nervous energy. I stop and turn to Galen and Jareth.

“Wait here,” I tell them. If something is wrong, I want to handle it head-on rather than put my friends in danger.

I creep toward the door. When I notice it’s ajar, I turn toward Galen and Jareth and alert them.

“Briar,” I call out. “Are you ready?”

I’m greeted with silence, just as I suspected when I stepped inside the door. I search both areas of the space and there is no sign of her, or even a struggle. I rush back toward the hall and shout, “She’s gone.”

Jareth and Galen follow me back into the room and we perform a more thorough search. I don’t expect us to find her hiding, and I’m confident I know who took her. Still, there’s always evidence, something definitive to point to Luca.

“Got something,” Jareth calls from what I consider to be the playroom. He’s sitting at the table, his laptop open. On his screen is a series of security images. “Looks like they took her right after you left. Didn’t even bother to dress her, just wrapped her in a sheet.
